The Edison Award is presented annually—usually to one U.S. and one international electric company—selected from members of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI). It is EEI's most prestigious award and has been presented since 1922. NominationsNominations for the 2008 Award will be accepted on or before January 30, 2008, for accomplishments in 2007.
Any member company of the Edison Electric Institute, U.S. or international, may nominate itself or any other member. Each entry must include the following: - Nomination Form
(or facsimile) signed or approved by a CEO - Description of the achievement (no more than 3 pages)
Selection and JudgingA Review Committee, appointed by EEI’s president and comprised of editors of electric industry trade publications, will select finalists from the nominees in each membership category. The chairman of EEI will invite these finalists to submit presentations for review by the Judging Panel. The Panel, consisting of the current chairman of EEI and retired industry senior executives, will determine the winners. CriteriaThe evaluation of nominees is relative and is based on leadership, innovation, advancement and overall contribution to the electric utility industry. Award PresentationThe awards are announced and presented to the winners at the EEI Annual Convention and Expo in June. AccomplishmentsThe specific achievements for which the company is being nominated should have been substantially completed during the preceding calendar year. These accomplishments may include (but need not be limited to) any or all of the following areas: engineering, construction, operations, communications, customer service, environment, finances, or strategy. EEI Edison Award Recipients2007Great Plains Energy - Great Plains Energy subsidiary Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) established a Comprehensive Energy Plan to meet its region's growing demand for clean, affordable energy by developing new, clean energy sources, making proactive environmental and infrastructure improvements and creating innovative energy efficiency and demand-response programs. KCP&L has worked with a wide variety of stakeholders, establishing true partnerships within its communities to create political and regulatory environments that have allowed the company to deliver on its promises. AES Latin America - AES Latin America developed a knowledge management process that enables the business to readily transfer proven operational techniques among its more than 45 generation plants and nine distribution companies to improve operational performance. This process helped the company set new records for plant availability and reliability and significantly improved AES's customer service and satisfaction throughout the region, including in some of its most remote and poor areas. This innovative program can be replicated across other regional groups at AES and promises to help improve the overall quality of life for thousands of people in Latin America and worldwide.
2006Progress Energy - For outstanding operation of its nuclear and fossil power plants, showing leadership in performance, availability, and cost-efficiency. Also, for demonstrating significant improvements in distribution reliability through advanced maintenance and metering. By implementing a culture of "People, Performance, and Excellence," Progress Energy has achieved outstanding results. They discovered that "from the plant floor to the front door," the key to customer satisfaction is sustained operational excellence. Xcel Energy - For developing and implementing a first-of-its-kind initiative, Utility Innovations, a partnership designed to leverage the cutting-edge developments of leading technology providers by deploying new products more quickly, fundamentally improving the participants' working relationships. All the partners agreed to share intellectual property, and project development was conducted in an open and transparent process. Utility Innovations created value for the company by engaging the minds and efforts of many, rather than relying on the usual approach of attempting to find new solutions on its own. Korea Electric Power Corp. - For two significant technical accomplishments. First, the company constructed a 345 kV transmission line, which runs 25 miles across the sea from Yonghung Island to Seoul. Construction featured a number of technical innovations, including new foundation systems, improved conductors, and a significantly greater distance between towers. Second, the company completed an upgrade in the country's distribution voltage from 100 to 220 volts, allowing a significant increase in the ability to deliver power, and notable reductions in line losses. It is the culmination of a 30-year effort, and caps a project unique in the industry.
2005Constellation Energy - for their outstanding implementation of strategy, leading to superior operational and financial results. The company evolved from a regional regulated utility to include operations in 31 states, becoming North America's number one supplier of energy to wholesale and to retail customers in competitive markets. In 2004 the company completed refueling outages in record time, emerged as a wholesale and retail energy leader; and provided excellent return to shareholders. Entergy - recognized for an aggressive strategy to improve productivity and shareholder return while also making investments in its core utility operations. This led to reduced cost and environmental impact, as well as improvements in customer service, reliability, and safety. Their success was demonstrated by outstanding nuclear operations, leadership in new nuclear licensing, superior productivity in its unregulated fleet, excellent environmental programs, and leadership in helping needy customers. ATCO Electric - ATCO Electric is recognized for the completion of its Dover to Whitefish Transmission project. This project involved building 217 miles of new 240 kV transmission line and three entirely new substations. It was completed in just 10 months, on-time and on-budget. While completing the project, the company placed priority on environmental protection through innovative LiDAR mapping, JIT engineering, innovative tower design, and protection of traditional Aboriginal lands.
2004Wisconsin Energy - In recognition of its innovation and leadership in expanding the markets for coal combustion products. Demonstrating great leadership and innovation, We Energies has patented processes to recover, reburn and utilize ash. As a result, these coal combustion products have been extensively used in pavement, structural fill, and as a concrete aggregate in a variety of building projects. ScottishPower - In recognition of the company’s strong operational performance in delivering improved customer service while achieving excellent financial growth. ScottishPower showed great attention to customer needs, introduced an initiative that provides qualifying customers with home improvement grants to replace old or inefficient space or water heating, and posted strong financial results.
2003FPL Group, Inc. - In recognition of its success in executing a strategy to become a clean energy provider harnessing primarily clean and renewable fuels while also boosting shareholder value. FPL Group's winning strategy demonstrates that environmental excellence and outstanding financial performance can go hand in hand. Chubu Electric Power Company - In recognition of its creation of the Transient Stability Control System, a pioneering online program to help maintain electric system reliability. Designed expressly to maximize system reliability, Chubu's new program is able to detect problems and faults in the power grid before they lead to broader network outages.
