Municipalization

Public power takeovers bring risks, hidden costs, and uncertain results.

Concerns about deregulation and electricity prices have stimulated local interest in public power. In some parts of the country, public officials and community leaders may even be considering a takeover of their local electric company. However, takeover efforts are fraught with risks, hidden costs and uncertain results. Local governments should leave this specialized business to the existing electric companies instead of risking costly mistakes for customers and taxpayers.
