Toxics Release Inventory

Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) is a publicly available database of information on the release and transfer of nearly 650 chemicals by private companies and government. Congress created the TRI program under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 (EPCRA). The program is managed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Electric companies have reported their TRI emissions to EPA since 1999. This industry has a strong history of environmental compliance and excellence. And, it supports your right to know about the potential hazards posed by substances released into the environment.

In 2001, new TRI reporting requirements took effect that required the reporting of chemicals that EPA classifies as PBTs, or "persistent, bioaccumulative toxics." Included in this category are mercury and dioxin. Beginning in July 2002, all industries - including the electric power industry - began reporting PBTs on their annual TRI reports.
