About National Accounts

Since its inception in 1988, Edison Electric Institute's National Accounts Program has grown to be one of the most successful networks of its kind in the electric utility industry.  The program has helped to bring together national customers, energy retailers, trade allies, and electric utility account representatives to make energy decisions easier for hundreds of companies and more than 100,000 stores.

EEI's National Accounts program focuses on the unique and growing needs of those commercial customers with multiple sites or outlets, including "chains" and franchise operations. This market sector is growing rapidly; by the year 2008, franchised stores are expected to account for half of all retail sales in the U.S. - a trillion dollars a year! The retail grocery industry already is dominated by less than 40 supermarket chains, with more than 12,000 stores.

With varying degrees of centralized decision making, and outlets in many different utility service territories, these commercial customers require a unique approach. EEI strives to meet those needs by organizing regional and national networks of electric utility National Account executives. These networks have assisted National Account customers in a variety of ways, including:

  • expediting new service connections
  • providing information about rates, policies, incentives, and industry restructuring
  • providing assistance with end-use energy technology design and specification

But in many cases, the relationship between EEI's National Accounts program and its leading commercial customers has grown far beyond those initial steps. EEI's National Accounts Program now works as a PARTNER with its customers, working with them to develop efficient energy management strategies by bringing new, cutting-edge technologies into commercial use.
