"Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work." Vince Lombardi
Perhaps Lombardi is best known for his way to build successful teams, but the staff at Hutchinson Technology, Inc. (HTI) in Eau Claire, Wisconsin also has a keen knack for finding just the right way to implement a winning organization.
In May 2007, HTI established an employee-based Energy Team that was tasked to "implement facility and production system changes for long term energy savings and develop an action plan for short term energy savings." To help identify and implement energy saving opportunities, Xcel Energy's Oscar Brandser, account manager, Eau Claire, was requested by HTI to be a part of the team. In just over six months, the team identified and implemented energy savings projects that will save the facility more than $280,000 per year. And all of the projects were done with little or no cost.
HTI is one of the Xcel Energy's largest electric customers in Wisconsin. In 2006, the company used over 68 million kWh at its Eau Claire plant - the equivalent of approximately 7,000 single family homes.
Xcel Energy account managers have worked closely with HTI since they came to Eau Claire in 1995 on issues such as energy conservation, reliability and power quality. As a member of the HTI Energy Team, Xcel Energy:
-
Conducted an EnVinta "One-2-Five" Energy Management workshop
-
Arranged for on-site Practical Energy Management training in conjunction with Focus on Energy
-
Assisted in evaluating and benchmarking energy use
-
Provided analysis tools and resources to monitor and assess equipment energy consumption
