In her 32-year career at NiSource Inc.’s Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO), Saundra Taylor has stepped into historically male leadership positions. Fifteen years ago, she was the first woman at the company to supervise in a power plant. Then in early 2011 she became the company’s first female director of construction; and in June of last year she assumed the role of director of electric operations. “Some people said to me, ‘People are probably waiting to see you fail,’ but I didn’t let that get in my way or intimidate me,” she said. As a whole, the utility industry continues to make progress at diversifying its workforce and increasing the number of women in leadership positions. As a part of its efforts, NiSource created the “Building the NextGen: Women in Leadership” program, which is part of the company’s inclusion and diversity efforts and specifically designed to build a sustainable pipeline of women leaders at the company.
