During an outage, a utility’s efforts come from three broad functions. In the customer communication function, the customer contacts the utility to report the trouble and maybe even passes on some information as to cause and location of equipment failure. As the outage continues, the customer will appreciate updates of estimated time of restoration and ultimately a check by the utility to confirm that power has been restored. At the same time, the utility provides progress reports to senior management and regulators.

The restoration of service function includes collecting information from customers, identifying outage locations, assessing resources, prioritizing the dispatch of repair crews, and monitoring their progress.
