The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) was born January 12, 1933, succeeding the National Electric Light Association. EEI's 75th anniversary is a milestone that gives pause for reflection on the significant evolution of our industry since 1933. From the depths of the depression years through World War II and up to the energy and environmental policy debates of today, EEI has helped the electric utility industry successfully meet the challenges of providing affordable, reliable, and increasingly clean electricity to customers across the nation. Even as U.S. utilities work to meet the growing demand for electricity, which is expected to surge 40 percent by 2030, our industry is equipping customers with new and innovative ways to conserve power and to use electricity more efficiently, in part to help us continue reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with climate change. The world of 2008 would be virtually unrecognizable to our customers back in 1933, but EEI's mission has remained unchanged.
