EEI Releases Updated Three-Year Projection of Industry Capital Expenditures

EEI’s Financial Analysis group has updated its three-year projection of industry capital expenditures (capex):

    • 2012: $94.7 billion
    • 2013: $83.6 billion
    • 2014: $80.0 billion

Projected spending in 2012 has increased more than 10 percent over previous projections. The increases are generally due to accelerations of various capital projects, a higher volume of near-term renewables projects (primarily solar and wind), and an expanded range of projects related to environmental compliance.

Although 2012 shows increased spending, the average projected spending for the 2012-2014 time period is in line with the industry average spending of the past several years.

EEI compiled these industry-level projections from current company presentations and SEC filings. Additionally, EEI contacted some companies directly for further guidance.
