Are you ready? With the winter storm season upon us, Edison Electric Institute and its member companies want to remind you about the importance of preparing for storms and other emergency situations. Taking simple steps now to prepare for emergencies in your home, business, and community can pay great dividends if, and when, an emergency situation occurs.
For example, if a storm is approaching, there are simple steps you can take to prepare for a possible power outage:
- Store at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable food that requires no refrigeration or cooking and uses little water;
- Charge your cell phone and any other electronic devices that need to be charged;
- Keep flashlights and extra batteries on hand;
- Post emergency telephone numbers, including the number of your local electric company to report outages, near telephones; and
- Follow safe operating procedures for generators. Never operate one inside your home or in an enclosed space, such as a garage.
Safety First
During and after an outage, “Safety First” is the highest priority for utilities and their customers. You should stay away from downed power lines and fallen trees, which could conceal live wires. Immediately report downed power lines to your local utilities or call 911. If you are experiencing a power outage in cold weather, open your blinds during the day, cover windows with drapes at night, avoid alcoholic beverages, and gather in a central room where there is an alternative heat source, such as a fireplace or kerosene space heater. If using portable stoves, kerosene heaters, or lanterns, make sure that the area is sufficiently ventilated.
