“CEO Update” Names EEI’s Brian L. Wolff as a Top Lobbyist For 2013
WASHINGTON (Wednesday, May 08, 2013) - Brian L. Wolff, EEI Senior Vice President, was named one of the 13 top lobbyists of 2013 by CEO Update in its annual issue that identifies those who were able to achieve major victories for trade and professional associations in a year largely noted for gridlock in Congress.

“We are very proud of Brian’s leadership on the important issues that confront our industry,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn.

Wolff was recognized for his conception and execution of the multi-faceted “Defend My Dividend” campaign, which educated lawmakers and electric power industry stakeholders about the importance of maintaining low dividend tax rates that are on par with the tax rates for capital gains. DMD’s grassroots campaign mobilized a base of utility employees, shareholders, retirees and other concerned citizens to generate more than 300,000 e-mails and phone calls to members of Congress.

“It is an honor to be selected by CEO Update, but this recognition is not mine alone,” said Wolff.  “Everyone in the electric power industry – from our member companies to our team at EEI – was instrumental in helping to make sure the Defend My Dividend campaign was a success. This was truly a grassroots initiative where, through working together, we were able to show our strength and achieve a favorable result.”

In January, Congress passed the “American Taxpayer Relief Act,” which permanently linked dividend and capital gains tax rates, and set the top tax rate for both at 20 percent for couples earning more than $450,000. Absent this legislation, dividends would have been taxed as ordinary income with a top tax rate of 39.6 percent beginning in 2013; the top tax rate on capital gains would have been capped at 20 percent.

Reporter William Ehart says that “top association lobbyists had to rise above the din to get things done in the past 12 months. The going is getting tougher, and grassroots action has grown in importance as Members of Congress increasingly assign priority to the voices of constituents.”

CEO Update has been recognizing Top Lobbyists since 2008. The publication receives dozens of nominations from Washington insiders including CEOs, other lobbyists and Hill staffers.
