EEI President Tom Kuhn Congratulates David Bernhardt on His Confirmation as Secretary of the Interior

WASHINGTON (April 11, 2019) - Edison Electric Institute (EEI) President Tom Kuhn today issued the following statement on David Bernhardt’s confirmation as Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI).

“On behalf of our member companies, America’s investor-owned electric companies, EEI congratulates our new Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt, and we commend him for his longstanding commitment to public service.

“Today EEI's member companies are leading a clean energy transformation, but numerous siting and permitting challenges create unnecessary and costly delays for companies and their customers. At all levels, energy infrastructure siting and permitting processes often are burdensome, restrictive, and duplicative. These processes need to be updated to reflect today’s realities.

“There are other critical issues impacting EEI member companies and their customers, including vegetation and wildfire management issues, which can impact companies’ ability to deliver safe and reliable energy to their customers. Companies still are having issues accessing rights-of-way to conduct vegetation management, and there are also challenges with the current process for renewing existing rights-of-way permits.

"We look forward to continuing to work with Secretary Bernhardt and his team as they strive to provide more regulatory certainty on these issues, while maintaining energy grid reliability and environmental stewardship.”
