EEI President Tom Kuhn Endorses America’s Home Energy Education Challenge
(Wednesday, May 25, 2011) - Following are comments of EEI President Tom Kuhn on the announcement of America’s Home Energy Education Challenge, an energy education initiative to encourage students, teachers and families to learn more about energy consumption and efficiency.  The announcement was made by U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Dr. Francis Eberle, Executive Director of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA):

“The nation’s investor-owned utilities are looking forward to participating in America’s Home Energy Education Challenge and working with students, parents and teachers in increasing everyone’s awareness of electricity usage in the home.  Americans continue to use more electrical appliances and devices, and with family budgets tighter than ever and the cost of most goods and services increasing, it is vitally important that we find ways to use energy more wisely.

“As a father of school-aged children, I know from first-hand experience that they are our best teachers.  I am confident that nationwide participation in America’s Home Energy Education Challenge will help us all learn how to get the most out of every kilowatt hour we use.  Students and their families also will find out about the many programs and opportunities our companies already offer for customers to better manage their energy use and monthly bills.

“What’s also noteworthy is the emphasis the America’s Home Energy Education Challenge is placing on the importance of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics that lie behind electricity production and usage.  It’s absolutely critical to our nation’s future that today’s students gain exposure to these fields; electric companies in the future are certainly going to need this kind of talent in order to find innovative new ways to generate and deliver electricity while reducing impacts on the environment.”
