EEI Promotes Veteran Staff To Senior Positions In Member Relations, Meeting Services
Washington (Thursday, August 04, 2011) - Edison Electric Institute President Tom Kuhn today announced the promotions of two long-time EEI staff members to senior positions in the association’s Member Relations and Meeting Services practices. Jim Owen, senior director of media relations, has been promoted to executive director, member relations and meeting services, and Brian Farrell, director of member relations, has been promoted to the position of senior director, member relations.

“Our member companies face many challenges as the industry transitions to a cleaner generation fleet and lays the groundwork for a smart electricity grid,” Kuhn said. “As an association, our job is to help companies successfully navigate national policy challenges, as well as to recognize and help them meet their individual needs. Jim and Brian have consistently demonstrated the ability to help EEI achieve these objectives through their unwavering dedication to the industry and their strong relationships with our members. Their promotions are a product of their personal strengths and abilities and of EEI’s continuing commitment to bring the best talent to bear in the service of its member companies.”

Owen joined EEI as a media relations representative in 1996, just as industry restructuring began in earnest. As a spokesman, he was called upon frequently to comment on that process, as well as other matters of policy, including finance, major energy legislation and environment. He became director and senior director of media relations in 1999 and 2009, respectively. Before joining EEI, Owen was managing editor of The Weekly Bulletin or “Green Sheet¸” a publication of the Environmental and Energy Study Conference, a bipartisan congressional caucus.  Prior to that, he was an editor and correspondent for Hearst Newspapers in Washington and New York. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa and lives in Arlington, Va., with his wife and son.

Farrell joined EEI in 1985 as program manager for the Utility Nuclear Waste Management Group and served subsequently as manager and then director of EEI strategic planning from 1991 until 2003, at which time he became director of member relations.  Brian’s responsibilities have included building EEI’s Associate Membership program, managing the Strategic Issues Roundtable, and assembling numerous Critical Issue Forums on a wide range of key issues that anchor EEI’s annual convention. Prior to joining EEI, Farrell held positions with the Energy Resources Company and the Utility Solid Waste Activities Group, and was assistant to the director of environmental affairs at Pepco. He holds a BA in economics from Harvard College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He is married with three sons and resides in Damascus, Md.
