SDG&E’s Battery Wins ‘Project of the Year’
February 2018

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) continues to push the limits on new technologies to provide clean and affordable energy to better the lives of the people they serve.

In December, SDG&E was awarded ‘Project of the Year’ at the 2017 Dive Awards, which are presented annually by energy industry publisher Utility Dive, for its leading role in energy storage integration and partnership with AES Energy Storage.

SDG&E and AES Energy Storage teamed up in February 2017 to unveil, what was then, the world’s largest lithium-ion battery storage facility. The 30-megawatt facility was created to enhance regional energy reliability while also maximizing renewable energy use. The facility can store up to 120-megawatt-hours of energy, which is the equivalent of providing 20,000 customers with clean energy for four hours.

Since last March, the facility has been used in real-time markets and dispatched by California’s energy grid operator to meet energy needs.

Currently, SDG&E owns and operates more than 100 megawatts (MW) of energy storage in San Diego and has additional projects planned in 2018.  These projects include five new local storage facilities in California that, pending approval by the California Public Utilities Commission, will provide an additional 83.5 MW. SDG&E remains committed to energy storage and to delivering clean, safe, and reliable energy to its customers.
