FirstEnergy Sponsors 2018 Akron Marathon
December 2018

Each year, electric companies nationwide continue to promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle. This year, FirstEnergy again was the presenting sponsor for the 2018 Akron Marathon.

The Akron Marathon–which was held on Saturday, September 29–hosted  nearly 10,000 runners from around the world who came to Akron, OH, for this world-class competition. When the annual Marathon began 16 years ago, FirstEnergy signed on as a Gold Sponsor for the race’s inaugural run, and the company has remained one of its strongest partners. In 2015, FirstEnergy committed to be the Marathon’s presenting sponsor for three years, and, in 2018, renewed its commitment through 2021.

"We're thrilled to partner with Akron Children's Hospital to increase our sponsorship of the Akron Marathon," said FirstEnergy President and CEO Chuck Jones. "This race has become a nationally respected event, both because it's so well-organized and because of the tremendous ways this community has embraced it. Many of our employees and customers run, volunteer and cheer for this event every year, making this a perfect fit for FirstEnergy."

Each year, many FirstEnergy employees are involved in several areas of the competition. This year’s race saw 112 FirstEnergy employees participate.

The company also hosted a hospitality tent within the course where visitors could pick up healthy snacks, make signs, get a photo with the mascot Louie the Lightning Bug, and cheer on the runners. FirstEnergy young professionals even hosted a fluid station to help runners stay hydrated during the race, while other employees served as bicycle escorts to help lead runners and keep the pace.

Ohio Edison, a FirstEnergy utility company, also was on hand with bucket trucks that were positioned in downtown Akron with motivational banners hung from the booms to encourage runners as they passed. The runners were greeted by Ohio Edison Regional President Rich Sweeney, as he held the finish line tape and passed out awards as the race concluded.
