Industry-Sponsored Team Wins FIRST Tech Challenge
May 2016

In March, the Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD) along with 12 energy company sponsors, supported student teams participating in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC)  regional competitions through its “Get Into Energy, Get Into STEM” program. The program is part of the industry’s commitment to bring science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education opportunities to students, and raise awareness of valuable careers in the energy industry. Support for the FIRST programs at the regional level included funding for onsite robot doctor stations, technology grants for new equipment and hands-on support to students.

An impressive 39 FTC teams receiving the technology grants from “Get Into Energy, Get Into STEM” advanced from the regional competitions to the FIRST National Championship April 27-30, in St. Louis, MO. We are very excited to announce that one of our sponsored teams, the BoBots from Chesapeake City, MD (team #5916), came in first place in the FTC Edison Division – making them World Champions!

CEWD along with 10 energy companies sponsored the National Championship, which included a “Get Into Energy, Get Into STEM” exhibit booth at the Innovation Faire, onsite robot doctor station, and volunteer support for students. CEWD volunteers also had the opportunity to go on student-led tours of the FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics competitions and watch many “live” robotics matches.
