Driving Change in the Electric Power Industry
July 2016

The electric power industry is in the midst of a profound transformation.

In the Institute for Electric Innovation’s (IEI’s) new book, Thought Leaders Speak Out: Key Trends Driving Change in the Electric Power Industry, 12 electric power company, technology, and policy thought leaders offer their views on the key trends driving this transformation. The short essays center around three main themes:

  • The digital and distributed power grid: how today’s power grid is evolving and the implications for changing roles and relationships among electric companies, technology companies, and policymakers.
  • Smart city initiatives: the integration of information, communication, and energy technologies to improve the accessibility and resiliency of services for customers.
  • Individualizing customer services: using advanced methods and technology to tailor products and services to meet the changing needs and interests of customers

From large corporate buyers with sustainability goals, to small customers who want specific types of energy services, to military bases and the communities that support them, electric companies are offering their customers more individualized services and innovative solutions than ever before. Electric companies are also increasingly partnering and collaborating with technology companies to innovate and deliver these services and solutions.

The path to the future is never quite clear, but we know that our society and our economy are more dependent than ever on electricity, and our customers want safe, reliable, affordable, and clean energy to power their lives.
