AES-SONEL Wins EEI's 2013 International Edison Award
SAN FRANCISCO (Monday, June 10, 2013) - AES-SONEL today received the Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI’s) 2013 International Edison Award, the electric power industry’s most prestigious honor, for the company’s extraordinary investment program in Cameroon, greatly increasing access to electricity, improving system reliability, and providing jobs and social programs. AES-SONEL, an affiliate of global power company AES, entered the Sub Saharan country of Cameroon in 2001 and began investing in the country’s electricity sector in an effort to refurbish and add capacity.

“AES-SONEL is receiving the International Edison Award today for its distinguished leadership, dedication, and contribution to the advancement of the electric power industry for the benefit of all,” EEI President Tom Kuhn said. A panel of former electric company chief executives selected AES-SONEL for the 86th annual award from a group of distinguished finalists.

“We are really proud to receive this award,” said Andrew Vesey, COO of the AES Corporation. “The company’s overall contribution to the advancement of the country’s power sector has enabled us to achieve extraordinary results, driven by a strong strategic vision and relentless efforts by the AES-SONEL team to execute the plan. Our contribution to the renewal of the power sector of the country is also a great example of our successful public-private partnership with the Government of Cameroon.”

AES-SONEL’s investment of $1 billion U.S. to renew and expand Cameroon’s electricity sector between 2001 and 2012 represents the single largest investment in the country over the past 10 years. The improvement resulting from the investment plan enabled more than 60,000 new families each year to get electricity for the first time, nearly doubling the number of families in Cameroon with access to electricity. AES-SONEL’s electricity sector investment also included community-oriented programs focused on job readiness, health, education, environment, and economic development.

“AES-SONEL’s commitment to improving Cameroon’s electricity sector illustrates the commitment our industry has to providing safe, affordable, efficient, and reliable electricity,” Kuhn said. “The company demonstrated great perseverance to expand and rebuild the electricity sector while truly valuing its customers and the country of Cameroon. AES-SONEL is truly worthy of this distinguished industry award,” Kuhn added.
