EEI Applauds House Passage of the STB Reauthorization Act
WASHINGTON (December 10, 2015) – Edison Electric Institute (EEI) President Tom Kuhn issued the following statement on the House passage of the Surface Transportation Board Reauthorization Act of 2015.

“EEI applauds the House for passing the Surface Transportation Board (STB) reauthorization bill, and we thank Chairman Shuster for his work to bring this bill to the floor. We also thank Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Thune for his leadership on this bill.

“America’s electric utilities depend on a stable fuel supply in order to generate reliable and affordable electricity for all customers. Often coal shipments are not priced competitively in certain areas of the country, and the process to seek relief has become a time-consuming and costly exercise that can take several years and cost millions of dollars, ultimately hurting customers. This important legislation makes modest and commonsense improvements to make the STB more effective and efficient in resolving these issues, and will have a positive benefit for shippers and electricity customers. These reforms include streamlined rate cases, expanding the board’s membership, and allowing the STB to take up investigations on its own.

“We look forward to the President swiftly signing the bill into law and to working with the STB as these changes and reforms are implemented to ensure they benefit electricity customers.”
