Electric Transportation Benefits Customers, Communities, and the Environment
Electric Transportation Benefits Customers, Communities, and the Environment
EEI’s member companies—our nation’s investor-owned electric companies—are committed to providing America’s resilient clean energy and to delivering a cleaner, smarter, stronger energy future for the customers and communities they proudly serve.
To create a cleaner economy, we will need a cleaner transportation sector. Today, the transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. economy. Expanding the use of electricity in transportation saves money, improves the environment, and enhances quality of life for everyone. The new generation of electric transportation will help the nation enter an era of clean transportation, and it also will enhance U.S. energy and economic security.
More than 2 million electric vehicles (EVs) already are on U.S. roads, and EEI projects that this number will grow to nearly 22 million EVs in 2030. Given this growth in EVs, we estimate that more than 100,000 EV fast charging ports will be needed. That is more than a ten-fold increase over what we have today.
Today, the biggest barrier to EV adoption is not a lack of EVs. It is a lack of access to charging infrastructure that is convenient, affordable, equitable, and reliable.
EEI’s member companies already are investing more than $3.4 billion to help build and to deploy this charging infrastructure and to accelerate electric transportation programs, with more than $1 billion of additional investment pending.
Read on to learn how EEI’s member companies are advancing electric transportation across the country.
