EEI Selected to Lead National Consortium for the Advancement of Long Duration Energy Storage Technologies

WASHINGTON (August 05, 2026) — The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) today announced that it has been selected by Sandia National Laboratories to lead the National Consortium for the Advancement of Long Duration Energy Storage Technologies (LDES National Consortium), a forum focused on advancing the commercialization of long-duration energy storage technologies. 

Through the LDES National Consortium, EEI will convene LDES stakeholders, including industry leaders, technical experts, national laboratories, government partners, investors, regulators, and technology developers to identify barriers, develop solutions, and accelerate commercialization and deployment. 

As electricity demand grows, the supply mix changes, and electric companies continue modernizing the grid, proven and tested technologies will be critical to making the system more dynamic, flexible, and efficient. Commercializing long-duration energy storage technologies can improve reliability and resilience, reduce supply costs during high-price periods, and optimize infrastructure investment by making better use of the existing electric system.

An original teaming partner in the LDES National Consortium, EEI has been active in the effort since its inception, contributing to working groups focused on specific commercialization and deployment challenges. EEI also helped establish a multi-year collaboration with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the Long Duration Energy Storage Council, and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to accelerate the commercialization and deployment of long-duration energy storage technologies.
